Who is a Man of Peace
Some people think that a man of peace is somebody who never provokes anybody’s hard feelings or somebody who is always in harmony with everybody and every situation. Some think that a man of peace is somebody who is always silent and calm even in the face of injustice. There is nobody who can fit into these categories. Some people appear so placid they cannot hurt a guilty fly under the cover of being peaceful but they can kill an innocent elephant. Such people are conspirators not men of peace. They are hypocrites no peace lovers. A man of peace is paradoxically a man of war because he takes sides with the light against the darkness, with the weak against the powerful, with the captive against the captor, with the slave against the slave master, with the oppressed against the oppressor, with the just against the unjust. This is why almost all the true prophets of old and Jesus of Nazareth were killed. This is why almost all the prophets of social justice of our time – Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Junior, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Oscar Romero, Helder Camara, Nelson Mandela, Gani Fawehinmi and many others – were killed or incarcerated. In a world where God’s ideal plan for peace has been thwarted by our wickedness, envy, greed, selfishness and insensitivity to the plight of the less privileged, anybody who takes up the gauntlet to fight for the restoration of peace must become a Prophet Jeremiah, a man of strife. He must first learn how to knock down many of the bulwarks that militate against peace, gather the debris and then proceed to build them up. Any person who assumes the difficult task of bringing good news to the poor, proclaiming liberty to captives, and of setting the downtrodden free should understand that he has undertaken to become an agent of strife and division like Jesus of Nazareth. That is what it means to be a man of peace because there will be no peace where there is no justice.
