The Rape of Democracy
In spite of President Obasanjo’s promise to the nation that his administration would scrap the sprawling office of the first lady and cancel its extravagant political paraphernalia, the office has come to stay as his wife and the wives of the state governors not only go about their routine duties in a convoy of government vehicles but are fast turning their pet projects into governments within a government and multi-million naira ventures that are biting deep into the government coffer. If we can forgive Ibrahim Babangida for creating the office of the first lady because he was an unthinking military man operating an illegal and unconstitutional government, have we any good reason to allow the unconstitutional office to continue to operate in a democratic setting? This and many more are the type of questions raised in this book. The author holds that the office of the first lady makes room for unnecessary bureaucracy and wasteful spending of public money. It is a brazen insult on the collective intelligence of Nigerians whose resources are being squandered to gratify some over bloated self-image.
