The Pirates in Power and the Song of the Oppressed

The Pirates in Power and the Song of the Oppressed

Nigeria is presently seething with palpable fear, anger, distrust, anxiety and uncertainty. The nation is grief-stricken, distraught and flustered. The ominous clouds that have been gathering since President Obasanjo took over the leadership of the country in May 1999 seem to be ready to burst. Almost everybody fears every other person. Both the oppressed and the oppressor and the rich and the poor are all living in fear and trepidation. Nigerian politicians have murdered sleep. And the stubborn fascination of nature has vowed that nobody is going to sleep in peace in the land. Nobody is free. If at all there is anybody who is free from the pathological fear that has gripped the land, it is the poor people who have always been at the receiving end of all that is oppressive and dehumanizing. They have nothing except their wretched and vulnerable life to think about and to protect. But their life is already a boredom of misery. So, what is the point expending so much energy to keep it hanging on? Could death, if it comes, not be a welcome relief to that which has become an existential burden! The Pirates in Power and the Song of the Oppressed is a protest against the mind-boggling excesses of people who captured the mantle of leadership in the country by hook and by crook, turned it into an instrument of oppression and enslavement and are blatantly making a mockery of goodness and good people in the land. It is a distress call addressed to God in form of letters spelling out some of the revolting oddities that combine to make Nigeria a hell for the common man.
