How do you assess a generation of military men for whom the nation invested huge resources to train in order to defend her territorial integrity but who decided to rule as political cabals for so many years and only to end up bleeding the national treasury dry and leaving a whopping sum of 28.2 billion dollars as external debt? What do you think of a generation of traditional rulers and leaders of thought who, in the course of their mad pursuit for ill-gotten money under Sani Abacha, threw reason to the winds and embarked on a sham global diplomatic shuttle aimed at selling the venal dictator's political ambition to the outside world and installing him as Nigeria's best president? How would you describe a generation of leaders who consistently embarked on the type of criminal neglect that has turned the oil-producing area of this country into a land of misery and an abode of blood-curdling violence?
