If the actions of Nigeria’s successive leaders have compelled some people to suggest that Nigerians belong to a race of their own, that Nigeria is a scam, a fraud, a mockery, a laughingstock, Gani Fawehinmi proved to us that we, the rest of Nigerians, are partly responsible. Around 1980, when as a student, I first read about him on the pages of newspapers and newsmagazines, I was fascinated by his way of life; the way he stood up and fought for what he believed in; the way he insistently carried the burden of all of us; the way he selflessly pushed his way through thick-and-thin; his daunting courage; his battle against injustice; his unflagging consistency; his love for the less privileged, the dispossessed, the cheated, the neglected, the underdogs and his general outlook in life. This book is a chronicle of one man’s indefatigable struggle against all that is bad, ugly and detestable in leadership, the dauntless account of one man who defied all the odds and made himself a sacrificial lamb in the hands of some criminals who hijacked and destroyed Nigeria in the name of leadership. The book is meant to keep the life and legacy of the great man constantly fresh in our memories, particularly in the memories of our younger generation.
