The Dawn of Democratic Tyranny

The Dawn of Democratic Tyranny

When Sani Abacha was the self-styled president of Nigeria, the country was subjected to hell but our lamentations for rescue reached beyond the shores of Nigeria and were hearkened to. The more the tempestuous tyrant tried to launder his image abroad, the more it became clear that he was a thorn in the flesh of his nation and a curse on the people. His greatest and most insurmountable difficulty was the fact that he was operating from the detestable pedestal of military dictatorship. Hence, as bad as the times were under him, Nigerians kept hoping for a better future through the intervention of the international community that fought his tyranny with all the diplomatic weapons available to them. When the dictator proved to be too recalcitrant for the world to handle, God quietly settled the case and Nigerians heaved a sigh of relief. When President Olusegun Obasanjo came in, little did we know that passing through Sani Abacha to him is like jumping from the frying pan into the fire. Today, our greatest problem is not just that he has inflicted greater pains on Nigerians than Sani Abacha. The greatest danger is that he goes on trotting the globe as the father of democracy not only in Nigeria but also in the whole of Black Africa while the world powers and the economic pirates who are more interested in our oil deposits hail him as such. Hence, instead of mounting pressure on him as they mounted on Sani Abacha and then compel him to mitigate his tyrannical tendencies, they keep quiet, sit down with him and plot the economic death of our nation. In this book, the author says that keeping silent in the face of tyranny is an indirect way of letting evil to predominate.
