The Amalgamation Of 1914 And The Scape Goat Mentality

The Amalgamation Of 1914 And The Scape Goat Mentality

What can you say about the citizens of a country that has lasted for 101 years (1914-2015) as a geo-political entity and 55 years (1960-2015) as an independent sovereign state, who cannot manage their enormous resources well and cannot live together in peace and harmony? What can you say about those citizens when, rather than find ways and means of managing their resources well and resolving their internal problems keep on looking for some scapegoats to take responsibility for their gross failings? They will destroy themselves, impede the progress of their country and destroy the hope of future generations. The Amalgamation of 1914 and the Scapegoat Mentality: Religion and Politics in a Multi-Ethnic Society is the author’s assessment of the way many Nigerians, including some respectable intellectuals, have turned the castigation of the British colonialists, particularly Lord Lugard, to an opium. Under the influence of this opium, they want us to believe that the amalgamation of 1914 has destroyed our past, our present and our future. The author contends that something very fundamental must be wrong with the thinking of those who believe that it is right to keep blaming Lord Lugard for our self-inflicted woes 101 years after the amalgamation and 55 years after independence. We should leave Lord Lugard alone to rest in peace in his grave and then face the bitter reality that we are the architects of our misfortune. We should accept the challenge offered by self-rule and prove to the world that we are truly capable of managing our own affairs without any colonial invasion.
