Nigeria To Be Or Not To Be: The Third-Term Agenda and the Dangers Ahead

Nigeria To Be Or Not To Be: The Third-Term Agenda and the Dangers Ahead

The third term agenda is here with us, fully grown and fully flourishing. When it was still at the embryonic stage, President Obasanjo and his cronies told us that those who alerted us of its coming were his political enemies who wanted to blackmail him. But without knowing it and without intending it, the president let the cat out of the bag in Germany on March 17, 2005 when he claimed before the whole world that some people were urging him to stay a little longer beyond May 29, 2007 when his second term will constitutionally expire. Hence, what initially looked like one of those antics of political miscreants has assumed a life of its own and is threatening to consume Nigeria by exacerbating the North/South dichotomy. Nigeria: To Be Or Not To Be? The Third Term Agenda and the Dangers Ahead is a sober reflection on the threats posed to the unity of this country by the third term agenda and the resultant political realignments. If our leaders are wise and truly love this country more than they love power, wealth, adulations and their trappings, all the ethnic and political bickering in the country point to one direction: This is the time for them to come together on a drawing table and define Nigeria and how we are going to live together in it as brothers and sisters. Where this is not done, the fear is that we may wake up one day to discover that this great country has been torn into several miserable banana republics.
