Democracy and The Ripples Of Executive Rascality

Democracy and The Ripples Of Executive Rascality

From May 1999 when President Olusegun Obasanjo assumed the country’s leadership to date, he has survived not less than four impeachment threats. However, while many Nigerians are disturbed that his numerous constitutional breaches and the consequent impeachment threats do not augur well for the survival of our fledgling democracy, the president does not in the least seem to be bothered. Hence, while the latest impeachment threat was raging on, he went further to stoke up the people’s anger by organizing people to donate hundreds of millions of naira to Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library which is estimated to cost N7 billion with an unprecedented éclat. The launching of the library under the auspices of Obasanjo himself, a sitting president, the calibre of the people who donated to the project, the whopping amount of money each of them donated and the timing of the launching posed a veritable moral burden for the president who wants to go down in history as the greatest bulwark against corruption. People wondered why the president should embark on N7 billion personal library project at a time when there are no books in federal and state government schools and universities. Some could not understand how the president could henceforth effectively fight corruption when he accepted donations from those he was waging anti-corruption war against? These and many more of such intractable moral puzzles constitute the theme of this book. All of them point to the fact that our embattled democracy is being choked to death by the ripples of executive rascality.
