Democracy Our Lofty Dreams and Crazy Ambitions

Democracy Our Lofty Dreams and Crazy Ambitions

Nigeria is currently in shambles. There is confusion everywhere. The political parties are singing discordant tunes The states are in total disarray as each of them threatens to work on a different political agenda. Local government chairmen are fighting the battle of their lives. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is in a fix. President Obasanjo's bid for re-election has heightened political tension and put a jinx on the entire nation. The wrangling and bickering over the dissolution of the local government councils, the staccato swearing in of caretaker committees by some state governors and the predicaments of others who are yet to decide what to do have all combined to throw the whole country into a dangerous political cul-de-sac. In the midst of this adamantine confusion, Nigerians whose vision has not yet been smothered by parochial considerations and vested political interests fear greatly for the country because all the symptoms of decay, frustration and violence which paved the way for the abortion of each of the country's past democracies are manifesting themselves once more. Like a can of water tightly closed and heated to a boiling point, Nigeria, with all of its bottled anger and grievances, seems to be set for explosion even as the president is trying to work the magic of keeping the country together at the expense of its unity. Which way, Nigeria? The entire world is watching.
