Chinua Achebe: The Oracle of African Literature & A Moral Voice in a Decadent Society

Chinua Achebe: The Oracle of African Literature and a Moral Voice in a Decadent Society is not a biographical exposition. It is a collection and a synthesis of Achebe’s inspiring literary breakthroughs. Considerable attention is given to his first book, Things Fall Apart, which was the first book that audaciously told the story of Africa by an African. By so doing, Achebe changed the history of Africa and gave Africa a splendid place in the world of literature. Attention is given to his small but mighty classic, The Trouble with Nigeria. In that book Achebe addressed the maddening exploitation of Nigerians, the laying waste of the best of the nation’s potentials, the scandalous pillage of our resources and the inflicting of enormous social dislocation on the state by Nigerian political leaders. His rejection of the national awards bestowed on him by Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan take considerable space. Lastly, while his last book, There Was a Country, raised so much dust and generated so much blood and bile from a section of the country where some people felt that it stigmatised their most respected leader, the book is rather the lamentation of a man who believed in his country, loved his country, and entertained a very high hope for his country because that country was endowed with everything, material and human resources, needed to make it a great country. But all of a sudden, the country fell from grace to grass as a result of the transgressions of her mischievous sons and daughters. The book is a clarion call that Nigerians, particularly those who use their leadership position to hold the country in bondage, to have a change of heart because Nigeria, the much-vaunted giant of Africa, is too big, too resourceful, too viable and too reliable to disintegrate or to relapse into a failed state. Generations to come will live to reap from Chinua Achebe’s matchless legacy.
