C.A.N. My Foot: The Reckless Utterances of A Wilful President

When, on May 18, 2004 President Olusegun Obasanjo imposed a state of emergency on Plateau State as a result of the ethnic and religious crisis that erupted there, majority of the people, particularly legal experts, described his action as another onslaught on the nation’s constitution and called on the president to rescind the declaration. Since other States – Kano, Kaduna, Delta and Lagos – were also embroiled in similar bloody crisis, the president was accused of double standard and political horse-trading for sparing them. Prior to the declaration of the state of emergency, a harmless question directed to the president at a peace conference by Rev. Yakubu Pam, the Plateau State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) had sent the president yelling abuses on the Reverend gentleman. Such abuses came to a climax when the president derogatorily blustered: “CAN my foot.” Since democracy anchors its legitimacy on the rule of law and here is a president who persistently makes mockery of the law, in this book the author poses a question, have the rest of Nigerians any right to keep silent when the constitution, which should govern the land for our common good, is under ruthless attack?
